One of my all time favorites! So happy when I heard the choir sing this again this morning on the broadcast. Beautiful when the bagpipes begin the song.

Winter Days, Grandkids, Fun
Had an extra fun day with these kids.
They went sleigh riding in our backyard...
then inside to decorate a gingerbread house,
run around and be crazy and have hot chocolate and toast.
Dreams of having a little nap!
Not happening with this bunch.
(I'll have one later..the minute they leave).

Happy Birthday Taylor
Can you believe that this handsome young man is my oldest grandson?!?
He turns 17 tomorrow.
He's smart, he's athletic, he's good, just the right kind of kid to head up all the boys that follow him in our family.
(A grama could brag, but I'm just telling the truth, of course!)
What a great day that was all those years ago when Taylor arrived.
It's been nothing but fun ever since.
Happy Birthday Taylor.
Love you tons,

Christmas Decorations, Parties and Sam's Birthday
It's only December 4th, and already the month is moving along with activities.
Got the house decorated over the weekend.
Jim got the lights up just before the big snow hit,
which spread the holiday spirit..inside and out.
Jim got the lights up just before the big snow hit,
which spread the holiday spirit..inside and out.
Got the trees decorated. Love getting out all the old decorations.
They remind me of Christmas's past.
Love our Golf Club, my crystals I purchased from Harrods when I visited with Nick in London.
The old sleds mom had painted for each of the kids,
ornaments purchased from places we have visited
and my very special Bonnie Blue Butler, given to me and signed by the real Bonnie Blue!
What treasures!
Put my beautiful Nativity on the Mantle.
I love the simplicity of this nativity and love that my family gave it to me.
All ready had a party.
We had Jim's family over for dinner last night. It was fun to get together with Tam, Kevin, Kathy and Lanny. We visited and enjoyed great food.
Love seeing family over the holidays.
But the most important day so far was yesterday!
My little Sam turned four years old!
He couldn't wait until it was his birthday.
He is the most fun child. So expressive. So determine, so ACTIVE!!!
I love his smile, the way he talks, his hugs.
Today he asked me if I would stay even when his mom got home.
He put his little arms around my neck and had tears in his eyes and said please stay grama, please.
I almost did..almost.
I love you Sam. Have a happy year.
You are my sunshine!
love, grama
So goes the first week of December.

"A Bell is no Bell til you Ring it.."
I started decorating my house for Christmas this past weekend.
Boxes were brought up from the storage room. Treasures were unpacked.
Jim was given instructions and was so good to do his part.
He builds a wreath around the front door, puts the outdoor lights up and any heavy lifting needed.
As I unpacked Christmas decorations and got to my collection of bells I found that they were badly tarnished.
So I decided it would be a good idea to polish them up a bit.
As I rubbed the tarnish away, the dates engraved became clear.
My mom used to give us these beautiful silver bells for Christmas.
Each had our name and the date. 1977..1984..1986..and it goes on.
I love those bells. I love how they shine.
I love the memories they provide.
Tonight I was reading, once again, my mom's lesson outlines from when she was a Relief Society Instructor.
I just happened upon the lesson that had a verse from a song from the
"Sound of Music."
It seemed fitting that I would find this particular lesson tonight.
"A bell is no bell til you ring it.
A song is no song til you sing it.
And love in your heart was not put there to stay,
Love isn't love til you give it away."
Thank you mom for the memories, the bells, and for always giving your love away.

Thanksgiving
From the time I was small, I always loved Thanksgiving. We spent our holiday at my grandmother's or in our home, where the table was set with lovely china and the aroma of turkey came from the kitchen.
I loved setting the table, I loved the gleam of the silverware. I loved being with the family, having everyone sit down together. I loved that my grandmothers and my mother, strived to make things nice for their families. I especially am grateful for the way these people lived their lives. They were all hardworking, loving people. They loved their families and they loved the gospel. They set an example for those that would follow.
When our kids were little, we split our time between Jim's family and mine. Each was equally nice. I learned from Maude how to make Yams (the right way). We were all having kids at the same time, so where ever we went for Thanksgiving it was crazy, with lots of noise, but lots of fun as the cousins grew up together. I am grateful for parents and in-laws who loved us so. Nothing made them happier than gathering their families together, and as I get older I understand the joy they felt when they got to have everybody together.
As our children got older, I have had Thanksgiving in our home, most of the time. We've done different things a few years, yet I still enjoy making the meal, setting the table and gathering everyone together.
We are grateful to be having Thanksgiving with Ty and Melanie this year. Just have to show up with a few dishes and enjoy the day. Loving the day as always, remembering those that are gone, and enjoying those who surround me.
Happy Thanksgiving..Where ever you may be.
Happy Thanksgiving..Where ever you may be.

A Tuesday With Wren
I went up to see Whitney and Wren today.
Had a good time seeing them, watching Wren play,
walking and having lunch at City Creek.
Took this picture of the Temple as we walked by.
What a lovely Tuesday.

"Why God Made Little Boys" And Adding Another to Our Gang
"Why God Made Little Boys"
God made the world out of His dreams
Of magic mountains, oceans and streams,
Prairies and plans and wooded land,
Then paused and thought "I need someone to stand
On top of mountains, to conquer the seas,
Explore the plains and climb the trees.
Someone to start out small and to grow,
Sturdy, strong as a tree.." And so,
He created boys, full of spirit and fun,
To explore and conquer, to romp and run.
With dirty faces and banged up chins,
With courageous hearts and boyish grins.
When He had completed the task He'd begun
He surely said "A job well done."
~Author Unknown
We've got a houseful of boys in our family.
They love to climb, explore..they are full of spirit and fun.
They do stand tall, are courageous and I love their boyish grins.
We are about to add another boy to this group. Tyler and Melanie told us this week that Dylan is having a little brother. He will be well loved by this group.
And so.. our beautiful Wren..
remains our little princess.
loved and taken care of by her army of cousins.
God made the world with towering trees,
Majestic mountains and restless seas.
Then paused and said, "it needs one more thing..
Someone to laugh and dance and sing.
To walk in the wood and gather flowers..
To commune with nature in quiet hours."
So God made little girls
With laughing eyes and bouncing curls,
With joyful hearts and infectious smiles,
Enchanting ways and feminine wiles.
And when He'd completed the task He'd begun.
He was pleased and proud of the job He'd done.
For the world, when seen through little girl's eyes
Greatly resembled Paradise.

Being a Grandmother, Autumn Days, Grandkids
"I loved their home. Everything smelled older, worn but safe; the food aroma had baked itself into the furniture."
~Susan Strasberg
This is how I felt about my grandparents and their homes.
Both sets of grandparents lived close by and I visited them often.
I loved the feeling I had as I entered their home. The homes were old and worn,
but I felt safe and secure there.
There were delicious smells and certain objects that stand out in my mind.
My Grandma Lundgren's old stove and her black phone in the hallway.
I loved her big front yard with the roses that ran along the sides.
Grandma Bagley's home had an old hand washing machine in the basement and a laundry shoot. They had a huge garden and a fish pond.
I am a different kind of grandmother. I tend three of my grandchildren on a regular basis.
I sometimes worry that they will think of me as a babysitter rather than a grama,
so I try hard to have fun, rather than discipline.
Plenty of hugs and loves, but I want them to learn from me as well.
When we pick up Jake from school, Sam always points out the Temple, so whenever he sees it we start singing
"I love to see the Temple"
when he can't see it we stop..then when he sees it again, we start up again.
Yesterday it was Veterans Day.
There were lots of flags waving as we drove along. I explained to my young audience that their great grandfather had fought in a war to keep them free.
Sam's reaction to this was
"You've got to be kidding me!!!"
I said
"NO, I am not kidding!!!"
I told them, " That's why the flags were waving"
so, they started counting the flags.
When we got home Mike had raked up a lovely pile of leaves..
he should have put them in bags and carted them away, because we had a lesson on how the leaves fall during the autumn..
Jake said, as he usually does
"It's a beautiful fall day!"
And then the leaves got spread all over the yard!
Sam and Dylan love jumping in the leaves!!!
Wren came over..she wasn't so sure.
Jake likes the leaves,
but would rather climb a tree.
So whatever kind of grandmother I am, my relationship with all of them is simple.
I don't know what they will remember about me, but I will remember days like these.
The beauty of an autumn day. Their smiling faces as they play and ask questions, and learn, their arms around my neck,
and that I love them.

"Gratitude unlocks the Fullness of Life..."
I always try to keep a gratitude journal. I like to remind myself of the little things that bring me joy. At this time of year when it gets dark earlier. (something that I do not like, I am a sun lover) I try and think what makes me happy when the sun goes down.
Curling up with a blanket to watch my favorite show. Lately it's been Blacklist on Monday night. Makes me look forward to the start of the week.
Socks on my feet.
Warm baths.
Extra Quilts on my bed.
As the days get shorter, instead of dwelling on that fact. I think and am grateful for the coming holidays. Loving Thanksgiving and Christmas.
And of course when it snows.. being able to enjoy it inside from a warm home.
A few thoughts on gratitude as I go into this lovely month.
And one of my all time favorite songs.
Love this...

The DeSpain Gang's Halloween Party
We invited some kids over for a Halloween Party.
Before we knew it there was a Ninja, Superman, Dash and a little Indian in our pumpkin Patch!
They were all looking for just the right pumpkin to carve!
It was the perfect evening to sit around a fire and roast hotdogs.
Then onto carving our pumpkins!
What a great evening...
wish the eastern gang could have found some brooms to fly out and be with us!
Missed you all.

Life Is Measured...
My friend gave me a frame with this saying on it.
I thought this picture of Jim with Whitney on her wedding day was the perfect image for these beautiful words.
I thought this picture of Jim with Whitney on her wedding day was the perfect image for these beautiful words.
Jim's face says it all as he hugs his beautiful daughter.
Lately, as my days go by,
it seems that I am just taking breaths til I go to bed at night.
I forget how many blessings...
Take my breath away.

Happy Birthday Jake!
Happy Birthday to Jake!
Jake is my helper as I spend my days tending three busy boys.
We have a saying. " couldn't do it without you." I say it to him constantly throughout the day.
He says it to me with a wink!
I love his beautiful smile, his thoughtful ways as he plays with his younger brother and cousins.
He loves to figure things out, loves to build, play minecraft, and swims like a fish.
He has a great imagination.
Can't believe you're six years old!
Have a happy day.
love you tons.

Fall Colors, Pumpkins and Crafts!
"I step outside and the chilly air tightens the skin on my bare arms. Summer has ended all too quickly and some of the leaves on the trees have already started to burn with the colors of fall. Fall colors..so bright and intense and beautiful.. It's like nature is trying to fill you up with color..."
~Siobhan Vivian
This is how I felt as I walked outside this morning and looked around my garden.
Beautiful colors everywhere.
I love the colors that autumn brings.
We've gathered the last of our tomatoes.
Never have we had so many as we did this year.
We also picked our pumpkins!
It's fun to use my own pumpkins to decorate my front porch.
Love the white one.
I especially love the color of this pumpkin. It is really an orangy red.
So pretty!
I got a little crafty this year.
After my friend gave me one of these cute crows, I decided to make a few as well.
They only took a few minutes and actually turned out better than I expected.
I'm planning to give one away to who ever stops by for a visit!
I've loved growing these ornamental cabbages and kale this summer.
Now that it's fall they are the perfect home for this little spider.
I love this beautiful season. After working so hard in my garden all summer, I can sit back, relax and let nature do its glorious job.
(Mother Nature does a much better job than I) Her color palette is perfect, and each year I wonder..."why didn't I think of that?"
There's always next year.
"Of all the seasons, autumn offers the most to man and requires the least of him."
~Hal Borland

A Sewing Project
My mother was a talented seamstress.
She sewed for herself and we three girls always had beautiful clothes created and sewed by our mother.
She had a little sewing room right off our family room, so she could sit and sew,
but still be a part of whatever was going on downstairs with the rest of us.
I sewed a little bit when my kids where little,
but haven't even had a sewing machine for years
Jim bought me a new sewing machine a few weeks ago,
so I thought it was time to start creating.
Last night my friend Marcie and her mom Kathy came over and helped me
cut out a dress and a skirt, using a dress I had and just measurements for the skirt.
We started about 7:00 pm.
They left at about nine when the skirt was complete.
I stayed up til about eleven and finished the dress.
So this morning I have a new dress and the skirt goes to Abby.
I'm really excited to have completed this project so quickly.
Nothing went wrong as I sewed these up.
I even put the sleeves in the dress with no problem!
Kathy showed me how to make the yoga band for the skirt.
I really appreciate her help.
Kathy is my age,
but it was a little bit like having my mom there helping me along my way.

Happy Birthday Luke!
Eleven years ago, Jim and Jamey had just taken off elk hunting.
They kept coming down to Kamas to call and see if Becky had gone into Labor.
Well, she had
So not too long into the hunt, James was down off the mountain into the Valley to be with Becky. Soon after, Luke was born.
He's the best kid, so determined, funny, the best smile,
and of course those beautiful DeSpain brown eyes
He loves soccer, baseball and basketball and
he plays them all very well.
I love it when we visit and I get
to watch him play.
The next time we're out there can't come soon enough.
he plays them all very well.
I love it when we visit and I get
to watch him play.
The next time we're out there can't come soon enough.
Have a great birthday

Fifty Years ago..John F. Kennedy visited SLC and I was There
When I was ten years old, my mom took me to see President John F. Kennedy.
It was September 26th of 1963. He came to Salt Lake City for a visit.
I don't know why she took me, but she and her friend took me and my friend to see the President. My parents had not voted for President Kennedy. They supported Richard Nixon. (I guess it was before they realized how "tricky" he really was.)
Anyway, off we went to see the President.
He was to speak at the Mormon Tabernacle on Temple Square, right in the middle of all that was Mormon.
Thinking back it is amazing to me how many people were there.
Downtown Salt Lake City was packed.
This was conservative Repulican Utah. But he was our President, and back then people thought it was cool to see and hear the leader of the nation, even if you didn't vote for him.
It was too crowded for us to get into the Tabernacle or even Temple Square.
It would be a while so we just decided to hang out at the west entrance of what was then Hotel Utah, hoping to get a glimpse of his car as he drove down the street. The main entrance of the hotel faced south, so we were amazed when his bubble topped car slowed down and stopped right at our entrance and he got out.
We were within about five feet of the President.
(Probably an impossibility today.)
I don't even remember any secret service, although I'm sure they were there.
He was very tall and handsome with beautiful eyes.
I remember, even at ten thinking he had gorgeous eyes.
He looked straight into my eyes and smiled and waved and was gone into the hotel.
Of course I didn't know then what would happen in just a few weeks time.
I have never forgotten that experience.
Of course I didn't know then what would happen in just a few weeks time.
I have never forgotten that experience.
It was just two months later as I sat in the lunch room in my school that the nation heard the horrifying events unfolding in Dallas.
The nation came together mourning the loss of this bright young man.
It seems strange to know that its been 50 years.
It doesn't seem that long ago.
I've always loved history.
I guess I'm getting old enough to be one of those people who say "I remember when...."

My Goals - Learn a new Talent every 30 years
When I was in my teens I took singing lessons.
I worked hard, had an extremely good teacher and enjoyed singing.
At the age of thirty I decided I needed to learn something new.
I am extremely untalented when it comes to the arts, so I decided to stretch myself and took up painting.
This was very difficult for me, but I practiced and practiced and proved to myself that with enough practice you could get fairly good at anything.
Well, another thirty years have passed and I've decided it's time to learn something else..
I've taken up the harmonica!
My first lesson was today.
It was actually quite fun, so I think I'll go back and hopefully with a little bit of practice I might be able to play a song or two.
( I wonder what I'll come up with when I turn 90 ! It seems I'm on a thirty year learning curve.)

An Evening with James Taylor
I've been looking forward to this concert all summer.
I've seen my friend, James sing every time he's made his way to SLC.
I listen to him in my car, when I'm cleaning or relaxing.
You could say, I'm a fan since way back.
As crazy as it sounds,
I'm even a member of his Fan Club!!!
I'm a groupie!
Being a member paid off last night.
When Jim and I got to the door our tickets showed at the conference center,
the host exclaimed, "who do you know.. you have great seats!"
We were kind of stunned wondering what she was talking about,
but just kept following along as we were guided closer and closer to our
reserved seats..right down in front and in the center!
We were shocked!
We were told it was because we got our tickets through the James Taylor Fan Club which I had gone through!
The evening only got better as the Utah Symphony and the Tabernacle Choir opened the evening with several fabulous musical selections.
I always love hearing the choir sing "When the Saints go Marchin In."
I love John Rutter's arrangement.
It could only be made better if Dad was sitting next to me to enjoy it as well.
(Maybe he was).
James Taylor's selections were perfect.
Loved every song he sang, but when he sang "Shed a Little Light" with the choir as his back up,
I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
Of course his last song with the choir and symphony "Shower the People" was unreal,
but then, as he sang "Sweet Baby James" for his encore, the evening was made perfect.
The sound in the Concert Center is so beautiful.
Everything about the evening was just what I'd hoped for.
A lovely way to end the summer.
Thanks James!

"The fragrance always stays in the hand that give the Rose"
What a wonderful world.
That is a strange sentence to write down after reading the newspaper and listening to the news. There are so many things going on that can bring a person down.
I have had a particularly rough month.
But even with all the heartache, physical illness and all kinds of other strange goings on..there is still so much of heaven everywhere.
The contrast for me is so strong.
When I get down or falter or go back a step or two,
what keeps me going is the army that Heavenly Father chose to bless me with.
I believe that Heavenly Father works through us.
I am constantly amazed by the courage of people like Tyler Hallsey and his family and Burgen Jensen and her family.
They give me strength.
I live in an area that could only be called Heaven in the middle of a world in crisis.
Here we have a bit of peace.
A little bit of land with houses dotting the hill..and those homes are filled with people who all have problems,
but who take care of each other
Such a pure love dwells here.
The closeness that we feel is priceless.
The love that ties us together is a rare thread, it doesn't break.
All of the people give of themselves over and over again. They never stop, they just keep on giving. I have been the recipient of their generosity and love over and over.

Miracles have not ceased and angels do exist.
They are all living in my neighborhood.
They are all living in my neighborhood.
"..charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever.."
Moroni 71:47
And these angels who live here have the charity that this scripture is talking about.
My dear friends and neighbors have given out so many roses over the years.
It smells like a rose garden as you walk down the street.
I am so grateful I live among these lovely people.

Happy Birthday Ty!
It all started 39 years ago today.
We spent the summer in Logan, waiting for Tyler's arrival.
He got here in about an hour!
We were so excited to have a little brother for Jamey.
Tyler's big brown eyes and easy going ways made him a very easy baby and also an easy child.
As he grew it was evident that his main interest was sports.
He learned to read from Sport Illustrated and the sports page in the newspaper.
He loved baseball, basketball, and golf.
He excelled in all of these sports.
He has always been a good and loyal friend.
He's the most generous person I know.
Tyler has a great sense of humor and
likes to think he's the favorite!
Well, today you can be the favorite.
A happy birthday from mom to Ty..who loved his gramps, loves his wife
and his wonderful little boy.
Hope you have a great year.

"Couldn't Do it Without You"
I can't let this week go by (or start) without paying tribute to Jim.
Another week...another back surgery..what else is new??
Jim takes it in stride. Taking care of me.
Working, being in the bishopbric, keeping the house clean,
the wash done and my plants watered.
He's had to be my nurse this week and done it with such kindness.
the wash done and my plants watered.
He's had to be my nurse this week and done it with such kindness.
Thank you for always being there for me.
As Jake always says
"Couldn't do it without you!"

Reflections on Summer
I love summer.
Warm nights, blue skies, beautiful flowers
And most of all, the family gets together.
Nick comes home for a few weeks, the DeSpain Gang flies out from the East to spend time with us.
I love when the cousins all get together to play and have fun.
They've been swimming at the Latimer's, played in our back yard.
We've been to a Bee's game, a Real game, Draper Days, to Pinedale and back, we've ridden horses, fed a pig.
We've been together.
I've seen my flowers grow, sung with my cousins once more,
seen a beautiful rainbow, watched the sunset.
Held my little Wren, watched Jim take walks with Dylan,
see the big boys fish with their Dad.
Spent days with Jake, Sam and Dylan, hugging, playing and laughing.
I've spent time with my family in my lovely home.
I love summer.
